The Way Back

How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I work mainly with intaglio printmaking as well as monoprint and monotype. I was primarily a painter but over the last seven or eight years I lived close to John Howard's printmaking studios in Penryn, Cornwall and became a regular member. Gradually printmaking has taken precedence over painting and I now have my own printing press. Sketching underpins nearly all of my art work. I love sketching outdoors and responding spontaneously to my surroundings in different weather and seasons. I discovered that sketching and printmaking go well together. So I use the sketches as inspiration and allow myself to be led by the process and the ink, until I create the mood and atmosphere that I am happy with. I enjoy never quite knowing how it will come out of the press and make the most of the accidental element of printmaking. I have recently moved from Cornwall and look forward to discovering my new surroundings here in Herefordshire.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

For me, being an artist is about sharing and communicating my individual and immediate response to my surroundings. Creating a mood, a feeling about the landscape around me and hopefully, connecting with others. Especially now, as we have come to value the nature in our immediate surroundings more than ever. It has been a refuge for many of us, a place to escape, to meditate and feel at peace in.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a printmaker and painter, specialising in landscape.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I like to work alone and in my own home studio, but I have also been an active member of the art community in Cornwall, exhibiting paintings and prints in local exhibitions and open studios, painting murals and joining in workshops as well as running them. I have been a regular member of John Howard's Printmaking Studios in Penryn, Cornwall exhibiting with them every year, and am going to continue with this from a distance. I have run workshops on monotype printmaking as well as selling work in local art galleries. I was also a member of a collective of artists sharing the running of a small gallery in Penryn, taking part in local festivals and events with them and doing 'Sketchwalks' around the small town. During lockdown I have been actively contributing to online sites such as 'urbansketchers', 'intaglio printmaking' and 'all about monotype'. I am now looking forward to continuing my practice and connecting with artists and events in Herefordshire.
