How would you describe the work you do and why?:

My art is somewhat contradictory; both painterly and linear. I explore both contour and pattern because I love strong tonal ranges. I also work in a painterly and spontaneous way; attempting to keep my work fresh way by using a broad repertoire of mark-making. Often my works are made in black ink on paper alone. I feel my work treads the line between drawing and painting. I enjoy using structures such as boats, trees and buildings or historical and geographical locations to compose and explore visual aspects which interest me.
I am most frequently known for my work in ink on paper, but I will also be showing watercolour and oil paintings as part of Herefordshire Art Week. It will be partly aa introduction to both my practice and to my travels!

Kim’s work has been recognised nationally. She is as an award winning plein air artist (Plintar Rapido, Chelsea, BroadwayArts Festival) finalist on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year having entered as a wildcard and has been commissioned for collections by national institutions (The Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, Jane Austen’s House Museum, Hampshire Cultural Trust) plus a few appearances at Mall Galleries too. Even so, Kim is in many ways an early career artist as she had her first career as a teacher holding an initial degree in Fine Art with Education from Winchester and then graduating with a Masters degree in Fine Art 9 years ago from Aberystwyth University.
Since graduating from her MA she has taught in a whole host of adult settings. Before moving to Malvern in 2022 she was a regular tutor at Art Academy London and West Dean College.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a representational artist working within drawing and painting, but very much concerned with the more abstract visual elements of fine art.
I am also a qualified art teacher; holding a more recently gained Fine Art MA from Aberystwyth University and a long standing Bachelor of Education in Art degree from King Alfred's College in Winchester.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

Since completing my Fine Art MA I combine my personal practice with teaching adults. I have the advantage of both a teaching background (Art BEd Hons and lots of years of classroom practice) with the benefit of more recently having been on the receiving end of some excellent teaching during my MA. This has allowed me to evolve my understanding of the adult student. I have been able to reflect on what and how I learnt, what I felt was missing and wish I had been taught, and include these aspects and all combined a strong understanding of how to teach art. This enables me to break down artistic concepts, skills and knowledge into achievable steps for my learners, who I know, from having been there myself, wish to get as far as possible as quickly as possible.
ORGANISATIONS I HAVE TAUGHT FOR include...
Art Academy London, West Dean College of Arts and Conservation, The Schoolhouse for Art (Ireland), Art groups and Societies, Museums, Organisations and Galleries, Individuals, One-offs or regular sessions and all either in person or via Zoom.
I can deliver a variety of Workshops with a strength in those often overlooked traditional drawing and painting skills. I especially enjoy helping the beginner and intermediate level artist.
