How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I make high fired Stoneware Domestic Pottery which is designed to be used. It is oven proof, dish washer proof, freezer proof and the the high firing temperature gives strength & durability. I make within the Leach Studio Pottery tradition & Arts & Crafts movement. I want my work to be accessible to all reflected in competitive pricing with some items specifically designed for the smaller budget. I also make more expensive large individual pieces & occasional Porcelain pieces interpreting the natural plasticity of Clay but still within a functional context.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Following a Creative Journey to express one's self through ongoing learning & a feedback relationship with the medium of Clay & associated techniques involving & evolving elements of design & decoration.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Derek A. Lamb Ceramics produces a wide range of hand thrown quality functional Pottery beautiful to use both in the kitchen & general home or garden setting.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

In the past demonstrating Pottery Throwing & other Pottery making skills at the Gladstone Pottery Museum & Teaching Night Class Courses at Stafford & Tamworth Colleges.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

Originally from Stoke, completed University education & began working life as a Probation Officer in London. .Here I discovered Pottery in mid 80s at Ormond Rd Community Workshops. Then private tuition from Sally Dawson (CPA & contemporary of Mick Casson). Returning to Stoke, continued honing skills at the Gladstone Pottery Museum with Kevin Millward (now Course Director, Clay College Stoke, & Consultant to Pottery Throw Down). A business Partnership with Kevin supplied Garden Wares to John Lewis Partnership & produced biscuit wares of hand decorators at that time (e.g. Jane Willingale, Karen Atherley, Kate Byrne). Early 90s set up a workshop in Stone Staffs. to make own Domestic Wares. Contemporaries were Mark Dally, Daniel Wright, Kevin, Andrew Mason & Ray Sheldon(Artist) who all subsequently became established. Approx 10 yrs break to devote time to raising my two Boys & worked in NHS as Community OT. Potted part time then for the last 5 yrs full time. Currently Resident Potter for a Potting Cooperative, Newnham, Glos. which grew from the closure of Pottery course at Royal Forest of Dean, Five Acres site then run primarily by Alistair Young, Jack Doherty & Joan Doherty ( now Joan Wilding). Alongside Joan, I teach part time, help run the workshop & whilst also making my own Domestic Range of Pottery.
