How would you describe the work you do and why?
I use naïve and expressive techniques to express my ideas and to create colourful, decorative poetic paintings; which are mostly in the medium of gouache. My techniques originally began during my training in Theatre design which included set and costume design. I had to work from my imagination which is how my style developed. I think of my work as “Poetic Storytelling”; each painting tells an imaginary story inspired by landscape, dance, music and poetry that delve into an ethereal world. You can view more of my work on my website; you can read my blog and events page to see where I am exhibiting around the country and my work in progress; www.katewrigglesworth.co.uk
For you what does being an artist mean?:
Being an artist is important for me because I love to create art that is joyful and celebrates life.
Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
Artist and Designer
Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:
I run workshops and demonstrate my techniques too, to art groups, both for children and adults.
CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:
BA Hons in Theatre Design and Adult education diploma.
I have considerable training in modern and classical dance; this influences the lyrical elements of my paintings. I enjoy experimenting with different perspectives, sometimes combining more than one perspective or various viewpoints in an individual painting.
I have also developed a craft element to my work through decoupage frames. I have designed some wrapping paper which is a patchwork combination of my designs in the form of a grid. I use this to decoupage frames for giclee prints and originals. Many of my paintings have been made into greetings cards and some designs have been published by Woodmansterne, WH Smith and British Waterways canal basins which were funded by the Arts council.
I have worked in many schools as an “Artist in Residence” and regularly give demonstrations to art groups on a nationwide basis. I have also undertaken private commissions and I have worked on community art projects, such as public art sculptures and garden design.
