My steel, slate and glass creations are inspired by the earth’s resources and look to incorporate my unique “Earthlight” sculpture creations back into the landscape. This Earthlight range of work is Paul’s observation and statement on where we are in the conflicting debates on the resource management of our planet. These sculptures placed in the landscape with an aspect to the rising or setting sun are powerful visions. Their intent is to question the western environmentalist paradigm.. A qualified observation is that our world would be a very different place to live without the mineral extraction that has contributed to our modern lives. Everything we consume is from the earth (mined, grown or from the ocean). However this Has come at a cost and these pieces from the earth provide a contemplation point.
Everything!! It is difficult to articulate really as there is a piece of me in everything I produce and I do find it quite an emotional pull when my work goes to a new home. Everything I do is my own designs but recently during the dark “lockdown” days I have been producing some tribute pieces in my “Earthlight” range to artists that have inspired me. Picasso, Mondrian and a piece from Barbara Hepworth “Four squares and Four circles” made in 1966 a walk through is in her St Ives garden. I have just completed a my interpretation in steel, slate, and lead Crystal, I do love it and she is a true inspiration to my work. . I have produced many pieces influenced by this genius .
Paul Burton Sculptures
I had a long successful in the “Global” mining supply industry where I experienced so many locations, people and cultures. Following my early retirement in 2017 I have returned and now am concentrating full time on my first love of contemporary art, in particular sculpture. My return to art is influenced by my extensive experiences living and working around the world in the mineral extraction industries, in so many diverse places ranging from the Gobi Desert to the frozen wastes of the Arctic Circle.
Not Really involved in workshops but often demonstrate my processes in my open days at my studio and Sculpture garden in my home in the west wing of Kenswick Manor.
Degrees .. BMgt, PGDip, MBA..
my sculptural art is mainly self taught although influenced at school and early part of my education through local authority funded scholarship. But I then went on for a career in the mining industry which has heavily influenced my outlook both on life and my art.
