How would you describe the work you do and why?
I combine a range of traditional crafts sympathetically with modern processes. My current body of work is based on carpentry techniques developed during the Edo period of early 17th century Japan. Since researching this period in Japanese history I have been enamoured with the crafts disciplines that emerged during that time as well as the philosophies which underpin them.
For you what does being an artist mean?:
For me, Craft is about self-expression and self-discovery. I find there is something special about a handmade object. There are subtle witness marks of human interaction etched on its surface by someone who took care in it's creation. Craft is also about forging new connections, expanding the knowledge and dedication passed down from one generation to the next.
Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
I'm a maker-craftsperson. My practice doesn't fall neatly into one particular crafts discipline as I combine processes from many different sources. I use everything from traditional carpentry and metalwork to modern computer aided design and rapid prototyping.
