How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I specialise in raku pottery and have developed techniques in putting images onto ceramic surfaces. I'm self taught after working for many years as a television documentary director and think my interest in image and storytelling comes from this.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

After working for so long in television - a technological, collaborative medium - I'm really enjoying the individual expression of making pottery. Working with clay is clearly tactile and takes endless practice to achieve results. I like the immediacy of raku where firings are faster and more direct.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Steve Freer - potter
