How would you describe the work you do and why?
Stoneware pottery, inspired by European country ware and by the traditions of Bernard Leach and Michael Cardew. I believe that everyday life is enhanced by good pots.
For you what does being an artist mean?:
It is what I do. If I were not a potter I'd be an artist in a different medium.
Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
A studio potter, principally of pots for use.
Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:
I was a teacher for thirty five years, across a range of disciplines. Since then I have had several student-potters alongside me and have given occasional demonstrations to groups, but making, firing and showing my work is full time enough!
CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:
My degree is in fine art, principally sculpture. I had grown up in the company of good country and studio pots in my parents' house, but only began making pottery myself, when I was appointed to teach it. I studied for a few weeks with Norfolk potter, West Marshall. Ten years later I worked with the master potter, Mick Casson. Otherwise I am "self-taught" (what artist isn't?)
Exhibitions in the last 3 years:
Group shows: ICF Aberystwyth, Found Gallery, Brecon, Hay Makers, Hay on Wye, Marches Makers, Kington, and others. Solo shows: Hepsibah Gallery, London, Ruthin Craft Centre. Open Studio annually
