How would you describe the work you do and why?
I make domestic ware in stoneware clay, using a gas kiln which I reduction fire most of the time. I am strongly influenced by the traditional shapes of functional domestic ware. Form has developed with the function over the centuries and I am attracted to this. Reduction firing produces more muted earthy colours. The high firing temperature means the pots I produce are all food safe, microwave and dishwasher safe. I like the idea that my customers will take my pots home and use them every day.
For you what does being an artist mean?:
Pottery has always been there for me as an escape, a way of losing oneself, a practical challenge to realise the vision of what I'm trying to make. I really enjoy the constant exploration of form and function, allowing forms to develop artistically at the same time as developing a palette of glazes and glaze materials which show the work off at its best.
Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
I am a recreational potter, and since my retirement I have been working from home.
