“Stuart sees the play of light as if refracted through a prism. He builds his compositions through gestural marks working in much the same way as the Impressionists, creating compositions that dance on the canvas.”

This description describes my work better than I can.
I have always made my living by drawing, designing and painting so I consider myself lucky to have spent my life creating images and I can't imagine doing anything else! Everybody’s view of the world varies and to be able to express my own vision is very energising.
Since moving to the Welsh Marches three years ago I have been absorbed by the glorious light and rugged scenery of the area.
I am a landscape painter and illustrator.
In addition to my main practice of landscape painting I also teach workshops based on the theme of 'light in the landscape', these are generally for art societies and adult education venues, this year I will be one of the tutors at the Marlborough College Summer School.
I studied design and illustration in Aberdeen. On leaving college I worked as an illustrator and my first collaborative exhibition was as part of the contemporary Young Scottish Artists in Edinburgh in 1979. Along side my commercial work I have exhibited my paintings in numerous joint and solo exhibitions, both in the UK and Europe. My work as an illustrator and designer has influenced my work as a painter in many ways, in particular my sense of perspective and composition, though the freedom of painting for myself is a welcome counterpoint to the constraints of creating commercial artwork. My works shows the influence of Scottish painters such as Peploe, Fergusson, Hornel and Joan Eardley
