Details
How would you describe the work you do and why?
I approach each new piece of work as an exploration and particularly enjoy unexpected outcomes, especially when these generate new ideas. I often combine and layer imagery, where disruption generates new connections. I use observational drawing as a means of relaxation; once I start to look very closely at something, small details and intricacies reveal themselves. It's easy to overlook hidden forms in nature in one's everyday life, particularly those details that can only be seen under a magnifying glass. I am currently working on these forms as a starting point for a new set of collagraphs and paintings.
For you what does being an artist mean?:
Freedom of expression and translating the way I see the world around me at any given time.
Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
I work in a range of mediums, enjoying the versatility that each offers and employing different techniques according to the subject matter. My recent work has focused on capturing natural forms using cyanotype. Although this is an early form of photography, I feel there is a blurred line between this and printmaking, since I use paints and natural dyes when laying the plant materials onto the paper. When printmaking, I also use a variety of techniques including drypoint, screen printing, solar plate and collagraph.
