How would you describe the work you do and why?:

Having worked in many mediums I have concentrated on painting in oils for the last couple of years finding the slower process more in keeping with the direction my work is taking. My aim is to to provoke a feeling of connection between viewer and subject and encourage them to slow down and look closer at their natural environment and celebrate the beauty of ordinary things. Having spent years working as a natural history illustrator I now prefer a looser approach to my work, focusing more on light than form and to make every brush stroke count.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Having grown up in rural mid Wales and having received what I consider ‘a proper country upbringing,’ I am passionate about the environment and am witnessing huge changes in the habitats so close to my heart. One of my chief concerns is how very detached from nature our modern world seems to be and how unaware of its’ importance for our future survival. My work has taken a different turn from merely painting pretty landscapes or illustrating natural history books to trying to convey a more emotional response via the means of paint, sculpture or performance activism.

Integral to my work are studies in the Waterhole Ritual method of horsemanship - a method involving daily meditation with my horses and working with body language and energy that ultimately achieves ‘the dance’ of both horse and human moving as one. I considers this and my long daily walks communing in nature, watching and listening closely to all around me, as much a part of my practice as the act of painting or making.
