How would you describe the work you do and why?

I work with traditional weaving techniques on a dobby loom, using a hand thrown flying shuttle. My colour palettes and patterns are informed by response to the surrounding landscapes and environments that inspire me. Each warp is planned as a limited collection of eight throws, I make the most of the tactile nature of hand weaving by ensuring there are variations within the weft of every piece. No two are ever identical, allowing the individuality of the handmade process to remain visible and valued.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

For me my handwoven work is a way that I can express how I see the world, paying attention to details and colours which are seen throughout my work.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a Handwoven Textile Designer, producing one of a kind handwoven throws.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

After graduating with a BA Hons Degree in Textile design in 2014, I undertook a year of internships with several established designer makers. This led to becoming a weaving assistant for Sioni Rhys Handweavers, and weaving the cloth for the National Eisteddfod crown 2016 with them. This journey helped me gather techniques, skills and experiences enabling me to design and develop my own brand of high quality woven goods, launching Rhian Wyman Designs in April 2017. And has been a member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen since April 2018.
