How would you describe the work you do and why?

I make traditional and contemporary baskets using willow grown in Somerset and on my plot in Herefordshire. I use heritage techniques that have been passed down through the generations, whilst at the same time developing my own visual language. I love making baskets as it is a sustainable craft; the willow grows quickly fixing carbon from the atmosphere and the finished items lock away that carbon for many years. Baskets are functional as well as beautiful and they do the job of many disposable objects during their lifespan. I am learning to understand my material, how its soaking requirements change with variety and season, what variety works best for different parts of my work and how to appreciate its subtle nuances of colour and texture.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Being an artist is about being creative and working with my hands. I enjoy the rhythm of weaving but it is far more about materials, design and transforming ideas into reality. My art is a craft, and whilst I want to be grounded in the traditions of the practice it is important for me to move forward to keep my work fresh and relevant.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I am a basketmaker and willow grower.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I grow willow on an acre of ground in Herefordshire and I have a workshop near by. I am developing a portfolio of work as part of a college course and hope to add a programme of workshops to my activities. I sell my work at local craft fairs and I am happy to work to commission.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

Since 2023 I have been following a City and Guilds course in Basket Making, Level 2 and Level 3, at Westhope College, Shropshire.

Exhibitions in the last 3 years:

End of year exhibition at Westhope College to showcase student work.

Your gallery outlets/stockists:

I do not have work in a gallery currently but attend the monthly Artisan Market at The Fold, Bransford.
