How would you describe the work you do and why?
My work has a slightly Scandinavian feel to it, I love to use muted glaze colours against the raw texture of the clay itself to create simple but beautiful functional modern keepsakes.
For you what does being an artist mean?:
My previous career as a primary school teacher was stressful, so being an artist allows me time to slow down and create in a meaningful way. Using the earth's precious resources to bring designs to life for beautiful homes around the world.
Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
I am a ceramic artist working with a white sanded stoneware. My home studio is close to the centre or Hereford City. Here I make my work which is sold across the world through my website.
Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:
I'm fortunate that I still get to teach without the pressures of the modern classroom. I run weekly Home Education Pottery sessions on Thursdays and Fridays, teaching creative skills to the next generation of ceramic artists. For many it has therapeutic qualities.
I also teach adult wheel throwing and hand-building workshops throughout the year
CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:
A degree in Primary Education, attended weekly hand-building classes over 15 years ago, learnt how to wheel throw 11 years ago after having my second child and attended wheel throwing classes for 2 years. I then purchased a wheel from my teacher and taught myself the rest... glazing, firing etc.
Exhibitions in the last 3 years:
Due to ill health and a studio renovation I haven't attended very many exhibitions in the last few years. I did attend Ceramic Fest hosted by CUP ceramics, markets at Dunkerton's in Cheltenham and I work regularly with the Roof Garden's in Kensington, London.
