Details
How would you describe the work you do and why?
I make artists books, paintings, prints, decorative papers and zines. Paper and books have always held fascination for me, and I love to explore the endless ways I can use them to make odd objects, funny zines, and occasionally something really interesting. I am interested in the natural world, the subconscious, and magic.
For you what does being an artist mean?:
Being an artist means that wonder is central to my life, and I am fervently driven to express it in whatever meagre way I can. Art allows me to escape from everyday despair, but also to engage more fully with life than I otherwise could. It is a lifeline, and sometimes a lead weight!
Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:
My name is Aoife Higgins and I'm a visual artist.
Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:
I work from my home studio when I can, and teach the short course in bookbinding at HCA. I occasionally run other workshops in bookbinding, paper decoration and art. I like to walk in the woods and the hills where I photograph moss and other small things to make prints from or paint later.
CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:
I hold an M.A. in visual arts: book arts from UAL: Camberwell in 2020. I worked for five years in an edition bindery, and before that sold my handmade books at market stalls in Dublin.

I had work included in the Folk Art group exhibition at Artlandish, Hereford last year.
