What If Icarus

How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I am inspired by a moral upbringing and ethical consciousness, fascinated by the question “How do humans behave?” Personal experience of the fragility in life has informed the exploration.

Through the medium of sculpture I explore the tenuous relationship between the inner (fragile) and outer (confident) self. Whilst every person seeks to present the very best of themselves, it isn’t who we really are. The flaws that are inherent in all of us, and how we survive despite all of these, fascinate me: it is after all our whole selves that make us beautiful. Isolation, superficiality, insecurity, imperfection, frailty, self assuredness, strength, this polarity of self are most attractive: for when we are alone, scared and unsure of ourselves, that's when our true humanity shines through.

I interpret this observation by employing an illustrative baroque style, recreating the human form passionately with dynamic postures. Placement, space and place offer precarious scenarios, and unscripted stories.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Communication is made up of 93% non verbal language.

As a sculptor I feel privileged in being able to communicate a whole range of emotional and physical states through an image.

it means that the piece I create can be interpreted in so many different ways depending on the experiences of each individual viewer.

It is a very powerful yet wonderful role.

I was always an artist from childhood, thoughtful, quiet, isolated, confused, questioning, romantic, sensitive and creative, but my job as a sculptor was only realised in my late 50's , with the support and encouragement of a few special people.
