How would you describe the work you do and why?:

I work en plein air and in the studio, often on a number of canvases at the same time, generally starting work at 10 and finishing at 6pm.
When I work on a portrait I like to enhance and portray the sitter at their best, as well as getting a likeness. I work directly in front of the sitter and also from my own photos. If I'm working on seascapes I take a few weeks at my favourite Cornish locations to create a series, finishing them back home in the studio.
Paintings vary in the time they get finished, some get finished very quickly and others may take me years to understand just what marks are needed to bring the painting to a resolution. Whatever is achieved is never easy and you have to factor in that some pictures will fail!

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Being a painter is not a hobby it is a complete way of life. I admit that it is obsessive! For me my work means dedication, discipline, commitment and a big helping of patience.
To quote a great painter Anthony Eyton RA who mentored me for my MA once said, the only way is 'to keep on keeping on'. It also means avoiding pleasurable activities like coffee mornings - which is not much of a sacrifice for me! So I often miss social events if I am working on a painting. The end result is always worth it, though, as there is something to show for my time spent on the planet!

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

My work is easily distinguishable for its exuberant and joyful colourist style.
Many decades in handling paint means I have developed through experience, the freedom to use both subtle and vibrant colour contrasts, and both loose brushwork with fine detail, often in the same canvas.
Each painting has its own unique colour language so you won’t find two the same and there’s so much to keep on discovering, exploring and imagining when you buy one of my paintings with delicious semi abstract passages of textures, and colours you can live with, won’t get tired of, and which will make a real statement yet blend in with whatever you have in mind for your interior colour schemes.
I use the finest Artist’s materials and Belgian linen prepared canvases, so my paintings will last for generations.
During h.Art this year I will be at IJL Brown Specialist Furniture makers where you can see what my canvases look like in a contemporary room setting, and I will also be available to give you advice on colour choices for your home, and FREE consultations on commissioning landscapes or portraits.
I will also be exhibiting with my friends Hereford Arts and Crafts at The Green Dragon, in Broad Street, Hereford.
