How would you describe the work you do and why?:

Studio Hancock is about celebrating traditional craft and engineering, it’s about reconnecting us with the materials and processes that are used to manufacture the world around us. Rather than try to hide the natural properties of materials, or attempt to make materials perform in a way they don’t want to, I try to find the sweet spot. The space where the predictability of manufacturing meets the serendipity of hand crafted.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Being an artist enables me to satisfy all aspects of my personality. I am able to problem solve, experiment, constantly learn new skills and loose myself down various rabbit holes. I strive to create objects that are aesthetically appealing, create a sense of curiosity around their creation, and fundamentally I aim to create objects that people want to share their space with.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Studio Hancock emerged from the frustrations of working in an industry devoid of any opportunity for hands-on creativity. I swapped full time work as a project manager, for full-time education in Contemporary Design Craft as a way to reconnect with materials, creativity and simply getting my hands dirty again. I am still in the early stages of my creative career, so my practice is still focused on experimentation and learning a lot of important lessons.
