How would you describe the work you do and why?:

My work usually has a narrative often arrives after many months of thought. I hope that my art speaks to the viewer. I'm passionate about Wales and its traditions and often include Welsh imagery in my pieces.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

Being an artist has its trials and tribulations but I have never wanted to do anything else.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

I'm Karin Mear and I am an artist. I mainly use paint but I also use mixed media and found objects in my work.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

As well as producing art I design and sell printed greeting cards from my painted images. I'm a tutor with The Big Skill and I hold painting workshops for all ages. I'm a founder member of Brecon Women's Festival and I'm a committee member of the Women's Arts Association Wales. I'm honoured to be the current Mentee of the Chair of The Welsh Group.

CV & Education, relevant & leading to your artistic practice:

I was raised in Aberdare in the South Wales Valleys and completed a foundation course in art & design in 1985. This was followed by a degree course at Glamorgan University where I gained a BA (First Class Hons)

Upon graduating Karin lived in London for a few years, followed by seventeen years in Brecon, before returning to Aberdare in 2018. While in Brecon Karin was a founder of Brecon Women's Festival and is an organiser of its annual art exhibition.

Working in paint, mixed media and found objects Karin's work draws upon the real histories of life in the Valleys and the personal narratives built from these along with current observations on life in general
