How would you describe the work you do and why?:

My paintings are characterised by texture, colour, depth, bold shapes, motifs & words. I work intuitively, responding in the moment to what is in front of me, until the painting is resolved; this often takes months.

For you what does being an artist mean?:

For me the flow is the thing - it takes me to a place, a moment in time; manifesting itself in shapes and colours.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

My painting process is a little different from the norm. I rarely use paint brushes - preferring squeegees, palette knives, fingers, razor blades - and my medium of choice is wax. I paint by constructing layers of either pigmented hot wax (using a blow torch and heat gun, this is known as encaustic painting) or oil paint mixed with a dense cold wax paste. I then scrape back into the painting, reshaping, layering up again ... and repeat. The physicality of my process eases me into an immersive flow.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

I offer two types of encaustic painting workshops at my May Hill Studio on the Gloucestershire-Herefordshire border:

1. 'My Kind of Ironing' sessions - fun 2 hour painting sessions, suitable for everyone, instant art using an encaustic iron and wax paints!
2. 'The Full Kit' session - learn more about the history of encaustic painting and how to paint with hot wax, heat guns and blow torches; use photographs and collage, create a small landscape or abstract piece, or simply explore and experiment in this 4 hour introductory session.
