My work is based on my love of the local countryside and also my fascination with wild places. I love the physicality of carving lino and the problem solving aspect of working out the reverse image and playing with negative space. Lino carving makes me simplify images into strong shapes. It is important for me to create a sense of movement and direction. I always a have a strong narrative element in my images, I want to create a sense of place or capture a strong memory or moment in time.
For me being an artist is about communicating and telling a story. I feel very strongly about using my art as a means of environmental activism . I am deeply concerned about the loss of bio diversity and pollution in our local rivers. I want my work to make people think and care about what is happening to our countryside, plants and animals. I have used one of my lino prints to make a banner which has been taken out on protest marches .
I am a printmaker working mostly with lino prints but I have recently started experimenting with collagraphs and printing/embossing images from my lino cuts on to clay.
I do not do any formal teaching or workshops.
I have a BEd (Hons) degree and I was a primary school teacher for nearly 40 years. As part of my degree I did a foundation course in art for 2 years.
