How would you describe the work you do and why?:

After spending over thirty years in education, I traded life as a headteacher to fulfil a lifelong ambition to paint, full-time for a living.
I currently live in Nelson, near Caerphilly and also work from my cottage studio in Mumbles. Feeling fortunate to combine life in the welsh valleys with time spent on the coast for much of the year, I never cease to be amazed and inspired by the beautiful coastline and mountains of my surroundings.
My work often depicts the power and vitality of the ocean and the beautiful scenery and heritage of Wales. I love watching the sea whipped into a wind blown frenzy and listen to the waves crash in a ferocity of noise and power. I strive to paint that noise, to communicate the drama of the terrifying and unstoppable power of sweeping, grabbing water as it cascades inland with pounding fury.
Using mainly oil and acrylic paints, my expressive style is created with the generous application of paint using a swift, tumultuous swipe of a palette knife, often finished with more detailed brushwork application. Textural contrast creates atmosphere and mood, as well as the impression of movement in much of the work.

Describe what you call yourself/your practice?:

Colin John Davies ( CJ Davies Fine Art) - Self taught, full-time professional artist.

Your practice & activities include e.g workshops, teaching:

Starting my professional ‘artistic journey’ in 2019, I initially took a co-partnership in an artist led gallery business in Mumbles, Gower. A regrettable consequence of the recent pandemic, was not being able to travel or open the gallery. This resulted in a decision to move in another direction in order to widen my experience , extend my knowledge and hone my painting skills by exhibiting on a wider front.
Prior to the pandemic, I held monthly art tutorials for beginners at what was the ‘Cwtch Crafting Studio’, Crickhowell. I hosted my own pop-up gallery at the venue, taking part in the 2019 Crickhowell Open Studios. Since then, I have exhibited in joint and solo exhibitions across the country and feel fortunate to have a number of galleries showing my work on a permanent basis.
I use both the internet and Instagram to promote my work and regularly work to commission.
